Computers these days have become vulnerable to a variety of security breaches. Interestingly, while most viruses damage only the target computer, there are others which use the compromised machine as a host to further damage computers within a network. Such compromised machines are called zombies.
Their owners may not be always aware of it, but these zombies become responsible for hacking into someone else's machine/website.
The main cause of a computer's zombie-like status is a Trojan horse, a type of malware software program that, while carrying out a set of written instructions, is also carrying out malicious actions which are often hidden.
Such viruses can be delivered into your machine via email attachments or through P2P file-sharing networks. Once you unknowingly activate them, they install themselves into the machine and make the machine a part of a much larger network of zombie machines (a botnet) that many a times commit serious crimes. Hence, you would not like your machine to become one and would want to take all steps necessary to avoid it. As a computer user, the following are some steps that you can take.
* Well, as the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure. A zombie attack on your computer can be denied in some easy ways. To begin with, make it a habit that you do not open any suspicious/unknown email attachment. Even if it looks to be legitimate, do not open it unless you had expected it in your mailbox.
* Avoid downloading anything from P2P file-sharing networks. They are not just illegal but are also the biggest source of spread of such malicious content. Ideally you should not be a part of one but if you intend continuing to do so, you have to check that your computer's security is not compromised. Have a good antivirus and a firewall in place. Regularly monitor the status of updates required by them. Regularly scan your computer using them.
* Keep a track of all the adware that is coming your way. To block malicious adware you can either purchase an adware program or download a freeware for installation in your computer. It will block almost all the adware that is known. Regular updates may take care of the rest.
* Avoid filling any form that may have been sent in your email, or clicking on any advertisement that is a part of your email attachment. Check out with the sending firm whether you were actually sent the form or not. This might prevent you from becoming a victim of zombie attack. Remember, there is no knowing how much damage such a compromise can cause you. So avoid it.
